What Are Your Real Retirement Excuses?

"Those who do not create the future they want must endure the future they get." --Draper Kaufman, Jr.

Recently, I saw a TV commercial for a children's learning center in which an authoritative voice claimed that when your children say, "This is too hard," they really mean, "I don't understand this." Likewise, when they say, "I'm too tired," they really mean, "I'm confused." And when they say, "I don't want to go to college," what they really mean is, "My grades are terrible."

That commercial reminds me of what I hear from people who are trying to rationalize away their fear of retirement. When they say, "I'm never going to retire", they really mean, "I'm afraid to think about it." Likewise, when they say, "I'm not ready to retire," they really mean to say, "I can't imagine having nothing to do for the rest of my life."

Tragically, many people really believe that retirement is the end of their last act -- that they have no other choices except to stay with a job that no longer fits them, or else to quit and do nothing meaningful with their lives. What they don't realize is that science, medicine and technology experts are convinced that they will spend more time in their Second Act then they did in their first.

Today's retirees are younger, more energetic, resourceful, educated and savvy than their parents at their same age. Sixty is the new 50. And 55 is the new 45. No one at these ages is ready to retire. Instead, those are the times to "re-wire" and use retirement as their perfect opportunity to refocus the expertise and talent of their First Act for fun and profit in their Second Act.

Whether it means renegotiating your job into just what you do well, working a shorter work week, pursuing self-development, becoming a consultant, launching a solo entrepreneurship, or donating your services to others, today's retirement is just a career transition -- but this time you get to make it work for you!

So...What do you want to be when you grow up? Why not let an experienced career and life planning professional help you find out -- and guide you into your Second Act without excuses.

"Everybody has their own private Mount Everest they were put on this earth to climb. You may never reach the summit; for that you will be forgiven. But if you don't make at least one serious attempt to get above the snow-line, years later you will find yourself lying on your deathbed, and all you will feel is emptiness."    -- Hutch Macleod

"The biggest mistake people make in life is not trying to make a living at doing what they most enjoy."                     -- Malcolm S. Forbes

"Many people die with their music still in them. Why is this so? Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it, time runs out."       -- Oliver Wendell Holmes, Former U.S. Supreme Court Justice

"A man without a purpose is like a ship without a rudder." -- Thomas Carlyle
